There are 3 classes of voting membership namely; Fellows (F.G.LF.F), Honorary Fellows (Hon. F.G.I F.F.), Members (M.G.L F.F.) and Associate members (A.G.LF.F.). There are also  two classes of non-voting members namely: Companions( CGIFF) and students. All collectively are referred to as members and all may use the designators letters indicating their class of membership except students.

 

  Election to membership

 

The election of candidates for membership of the Institute in any class shall be by Council who may require candidates to attend an interview in order to satisfy the Council that they have the requisite professional knowledge and experience.

Candidates for election may either be nominated by the Council or shall be proposed and supported as provided hereunder, from personal knowledge and in writing, according to a form approved by Giff.

(i) Any person desirous of election as a Fellow shall be proposed by two Fellows of the Ghana Institute of Freight forwarders. Where a member does not know two Fellows to provide this support, Council may accept a written support from four members of good standing.

(ii) Proposals for election shall be delivered to the Executive Secretary, who shall refer the matter to Council at the next monthly council meeting. Council shall cause the full names of those candidates nominated for election as Fellow, Member, Associate member or Companion whom they approve to be published on the official website of the Institute indicating they are candidates for election. stating to which class.

Council may without assigning any reason withhold or withdraw their approval from any candidate.

(iii) A candidate elected shall be admitted on payment of such entrance or transfer fee and annual subscription as required and until admitted a candidate stall not be entitled to any of the rights or privileges of membership.

 

Transfer from one class to another

The transfer of a member from one class to another shall be by the Council. Every candidate for transfer from one class to another shall be proposed and supported in the manner prescribed in the procedure for election to the class to which he/she is desirous of being transferred.

Entrance fees, Transfer fees, and Annual Subscriptions

Entrance fees, transfer fees and annual subscriptions shall be set from time to time by the Council.

The subscription of retired members, who are defined as any member over the age of 60 who has been paying subscription for the past 30 years and who is not working, shall be waived

 

Subscriptions shall be in respect of a calendar year and shall be due and payable in advance on lst January, April, July, or October. Any member of any class whose annual subscription remains unpaid after six months shall not be entitled to attend, to take part in any meeting of the institute that may be held or exercise any of the rights or privileges of membership until such payment has been done.

Any member may by notice in writing at any time resign his membership. Any such notice shah be signed by the member concerned and shall be either deposited at any of the local institute offices or sent through the post and shall take effect from the time of receipt by the first institute administrator.

The Executive Council shall have power, subject to a two-thirds majority, to remove from membership any member who is guilty of any unprofessional conduct, or who has willfully contravened any of the rules, codes of conduct or regulations of the Institute or whose continued membership is in the opinion of the Council not in the interests of Giff.

Any member whose removal from membership is under consideration shall, if he so desires, have reasonable opportunity of being legally represented and stating his case at a meeting of the executive Council of the institute. There is also provision to appeal to Trustees through council.

 

To be considered professionally qualified, the freight forwarder must:

1. (a) Have obtained the necessary experience in the profession by working for at least three years in a responsible capacity with a qualified freight forwarder;

(b) Be of good standing and be able to demonstrate his good reputation and competence:

(c) Have passed such professional examination(s) as required by the institute. The scope and details of such examination(s) shall be determined by the said institute

2. In the case of a corporate entity, employ such persons professionally qualified as above to ensure the proper performance of the entity's functions as a freight forwarding company.
